Description

Green Cat Contracting were employed as Principal Contractor on a design and build basis to provide 7no Vestas V80 turbines plus associated roads, drainage, and electrical infrastructure; sufficient produce a 17.5MW wind farm.

The management of sensitive interfaces was a key feature of the project. The site entrance was formed by the creation of a new junction from the public carriageway (A44) and subsequently crossing an extended area of common land. There were several public rights of way crossing the site which had to be maintained for the duration of the works and a number of landowners across the site extents. There was a particular interest from local residents due to the proximity of the project to local landmark Llandegley Rocks,  and a number of scheduled monuments and high assessed potential for archaeological deposits meant that a watching brief was required across the entire site.

The on-site works required over 3.5km of new access tracks and drainage to be constructed, including numerous consented watercourse activities. Due to the difficult nature of the site access, the roads and hardstanding’s were constructed entirely from material extracted from the local site, crushed and screened to suit the project requirements.

After the installation of several km’s of 33kV cable, the site connection to grid was via a DNO adoptable 33/66kV transformer and substation, designed and constructed by Green Cat Contracting to DNO and turbine manufacturer requirements.
